Port Hueneme is a small beach city in Ventura County, California surrounded by the city of Oxnard, Naval Base Ventura County, and the Pacific Ocean. The name comes from the Spanish spelling of the Chumash wene me, meaning "Resting Place". The area was discovered by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in the mid-16th century. The name of the settlement was changed to Port Hueneme in 1939 and the city was incorporated March 24, 1948. It had a population of 22,277 as of 2016. The beach in Port Hueneme is south-facing and made up of sand. It is known for its surfing. The beach includes a wooden fishing pier and stretches eastward about a mile from the harbor and naval base. There are also picnic tables and barbecue grills.
